Ambient New Tab brings living wallpaper to Chrome: paintings, physics and space that move on every new tab
Brooklyn-made browser extension replaces the blank New Tab page with scenes generated live on the graphics card, never a looping video.
BROOKLYN, N.Y., September 25, 2026 — Rainbase Leads Inc. today announced Ambient New Tab, a free extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge that turns the New Tab page into living wallpaper. Instead of a still image or a short video clip, every theme is drawn live on the user's graphics card each time a tab opens, so it never loops, never repeats, and reacts to the mouse, to music, and to the time of day.
The extension ships with more than thirty themes across four families, with more added every week. Paintings that move: Monet's Garden is built from about twenty thousand brush strokes and then stirred by wind, birds and koi; Bird on a Wire and Honeysuckle Wall bring painterly robins and a Morris-style wallpaper that grows forever. Space, rendered live: a ray-traced Black Hole, a gravitationally lensed Event Horizon, a rotating Solar Corona and a volumetric Nebula Drift. Physics you can watch: a real fluid simulation in Ink Drop, magnetic field lines in Magnetic Dipoles, Gray-Scott chemistry in Reaction-Diffusion. And small lives: pixel kittens, a tidying octopus, spider-orb robots, and a pixel rocket that rides the live Bitcoin price.
Three themes, along with a clock, the date and a search box, are free with no time limit. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase with no subscription and unlocks every theme, music sync, and every theme released in the future. With music sync, the extension listens to audio playing in another browser tab and moves each scene to the bass and the beat, measured entirely on the user's own computer.
Ambient New Tab renders only while a New Tab page is on screen, pauses when the tab is hidden, and drops to 30 frames per second on battery power. It has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking.
Ambient New Tab is available now on the Chrome Web Store and works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi and Opera on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
