Reaction-Diffusion New Tab theme: a dense field of dividing cell-like blobs and coral ridges filling the Chrome New Tab page

Reaction-Diffusion
two chemicals feeding on each other, forever

The Gray-Scott reaction, kept permanently off balance so it never freezes: cells divide, spirals turn, labyrinths fold, and your cursor wipes a trail that regrows.

Free to install. Reaction-Diffusion unlocks with Pro, $19 once, no subscription.

What you see on every new tab

Reaction-Diffusion runs the Gray-Scott model on the New Tab page: two virtual chemicals that diffuse and react, producing the spots, stripes and coral shapes that biologists call Turing patterns. Most simulations settle into a still labyrinth; this one is tuned to never settle.

Nothing is a video. The scene is generated live on your graphics card with WebGL, so it never loops and never looks the same twice.

Questions

What does it need to run?

WebGL2 with floating-point textures, which every recent Chrome on a desktop or laptop has. Without it a still cell pattern in the same palette is shown.

Is Reaction-Diffusion free?

It is a Pro theme. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, that unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every future theme.

Is this the same maths as animal markings?

Yes. Gray-Scott is one of the reaction-diffusion systems used to model how spots and stripes form on skin, shells and coral.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
