Monet's Garden
an impressionist pond that moves in the wind

What you see on every new tab

Monet's Garden puts an impressionist garden on the New Tab page. It is not a photograph or a traced painting: the scene is painted from about 20,000 procedural brush strokes when the tab opens, always the same painting, and then brought to life.

• Wind: branches sway by clump, leaf tips flutter, willow fronds and reeds bend toward their tips, and gusts roll through every few seconds.
• Water: the reflection is the painted scene re-sampled through ripples and rings from insects, fish, landing petals and your mouse.
• Life: birds cross the sky and swoop the water; insects skate; fish turn under the lilies; petals drift down.

Nothing is a video. The scene is generated live on your graphics card with WebGL, so it never loops and never looks the same twice.

What it reacts to

• Mouse: a fast sweep pushes a local gust; resting on the water makes rings.
• Music: bass deepens the wind, a kick sends a ring across the pond.
• Night: a hand-painted night version comes on after dusk at your location.

Questions

Is this a real Monet?

No. It is an original scene in the spirit of the Giverny paintings, generated from brush dabs, so there is nothing copied and it is sharp at any screen size.

Is Monet's Garden free?

It is a Pro theme. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, that unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every future theme.

Does painting it slow the tab down?

The painting is built in well under a second on most machines, then animated cheaply on the GPU.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
