Saffron Palampore
a tree-of-life chintz that sways

What you see on every new tab

Saffron Palampore covers the New Tab page in a tree-of-life chintz: flat colour, thin ink outlines, no shading and no 3D, like a printed cotton hanging that has quietly come alive. It is an original design. The layout is generated and every motif is drawn from scratch, not copied from any maker's pattern.

• The ground: saffron yellow with a faint mottle and cloth weave, in a palette of twenty-two colours.
• Sixteen motifs: sickle, striped and oval leaves; rosettes, cups, thistles and palmettes; tulips, fan carnations and leaf fans; fern sprays, posies, berries and spiral buds.
• The serpent vine: a fringed band patterned like scales that grows from an outer trunk right across the picture.
• The motion: slow waves travel down every trunk and branch, and each leaf and flower rides the stem it grows from.

Nothing is a video. The pattern is drawn live in your browser and the motion is continuous, with no loop point.

What it reacts to

• Mouse: leaves and flowers near your cursor turn away from it, then ease back.
• Music: with music sync on, bass widens and quickens the sway, mids wobble the leaves, treble shivers the ferns, and each kick pulses the blooms open. The colours never change.
• Night: after dusk the cloth dims to a warm candle-lit look, with a soft glow at the centre that flickers a little.
