Marble
unmixed paint you can stir with your mouse

What you see on every new tab

Marble is one of the three free Ambient New Tab themes. It fills the New Tab page with a domain-warped paint pattern, like ink dropped into water and left to settle.

• Marbling that never turns to mud: the paint relaxes back to rest over about fifteen seconds, so you can stir as much as you like and it always recovers its veins.
• Fine detail at any size: the pattern is generated, not a picture, so it is sharp on a 4K monitor and on a laptop.
• Quiet by default: leave it alone and it barely moves. It is the calm theme of the set.

Nothing is a video. The scene is generated live on your graphics card with WebGL, so it never loops and never looks the same twice.

What it reacts to

• Mouse: a small fluid simulation stirs the paint under the cursor. Drag to draw ribbons.
• Music (Pro): the beat stirs the field when music sync is on.
• Night: darkens after dusk, following the sun at your location.

Free or Pro?Free

Marble is one of the three free themes, with Constellation, Marble and Synthwave, and it stays free. The clock, date and search box are free too. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, that adds every Pro theme, music sync, and every future theme.

How to get it

1. Add Ambient New Tab to Chrome (or Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera).
2. Open a new tab and click the Themes pill in the bottom-right corner.
3. Pick Marble. Done.

Questions

Is Marble free?

Yes. Marble, Constellation and Synthwave are free forever. No account, no time limit.

Why does it look still on my computer?

The stirring needs WebGL2 and floating-point textures. On a machine without them the marble still shows, it just does not respond to the mouse.

Does it drain my battery?

It renders only while a New Tab page is visible, drops to 30 fps on battery and pauses when hidden.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
