Quantum Orbitals
an electron's probability cloud, drawn in light

What you see on every new tab

Quantum Orbitals draws the geometry of atomic orbitals on the New Tab page as a lattice of streaming points. The surface is a real spherical harmonic evaluated on the GPU, so the shapes are the ones from the physics textbook, and the scene morphs continuously between them.

• Three nested shells of the same shape, teal outside and white-pink inside, converging on a bright nucleus.
• Continuous morphing: d_xz to f_xyz to d_z² to g_z⁴ and on, holding each for a while.
• Field lines: dipole arcs wrap the vertical axis in the states that want them, with two bright poles above and below.

Nothing is a video. The scene is generated live on your graphics card with WebGL, so it never loops and never looks the same twice.

What it reacts to

• Motion: each row of particles streams around the axis at its own pace, the shells counter-rotate, a slow wave glides pole to pole, and every point breathes in radius.
• Mouse: the cloud tilts gently against the cursor.
• Music: bass swells the shells and speeds the streams when music sync is on.

Free or Pro?Pro

Ambient New Tab is free to install, with three free themes. Quantum Orbitals is a Pro theme. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, and it unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every theme we release in the future. You can preview Quantum Orbitals full screen before you buy: open the Themes panel and rest your mouse on it. Changed your mind? 14-day refund, no questions.

How to get it

1. Add Ambient New Tab to Chrome (or Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera).
2. Open a new tab and click the Themes pill in the bottom-right corner.
3. Pick Quantum Orbitals. Done.

Questions

Are these real orbital shapes?

Yes. The radius at each angle is |Y_lm(θ, φ)|, a real spherical harmonic, computed by the associated Legendre recurrence on the GPU.

Is Quantum Orbitals free?

It is a Pro theme. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, that unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every future theme.

Is it heavy?

No. The whole surface lives in the vertex shader; it is light enough for integrated graphics.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
