Jupiter
a real JunoCam photo with storms that move

A real photograph of Jupiter's cloud tops from NASA's Juno spacecraft, set in motion by a fluid simulation. Ovals turn, jets shear along the edge of the planet, and eddies come and go. Sweep your cursor to stir the clouds.

Free to install. Jupiter unlocks with Pro, $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Cancel anytime.

What you see on every new tab

Jupiter starts from a real photograph: JunoCam's view from the Juno spacecraft's twelfth close pass on 1 April 2018, with the edge of the planet across the top-left, an ochre band, and a slate-blue storm belt full of pale ovals and dark filaments. A fluid simulation running on your graphics card then moves the photo's own pixels.

Nothing is a video. The photo is a single still image; all the motion is simulated live with WebGL, and the eddies appear at random, so it never loops.
