Kitten Room
three pixel kittens and their playroom

What you see on every new tab

Kitten Room puts three small pixel-art kittens on the New Tab page in a sunny playroom: a cat tree, shelves and walkways along the wall, a rope bridge, a tunnel, a red ball and blue yarn. Each kitten is a little rigged character with its own gaits and a list of things it likes to do, so the room is never the same twice.

• Three kittens: an orange tabby, a black-and-white tuxedo and a soft grey, each with a body, big head, four legs, a seven-segment tail, folding ears and eyes that blink and dilate.
• Verbs: sit, groom a paw, yawn, stretch front then back, walk, run, zoomies, stalk and crouch-and-wiggle and pounce, bat the ball, chase it, grab the yarn and bunny-kick it, flop and wriggle, climb the tree and the shelves, nap in a loaf with z's.
• Pixel look: plump 32-bit sprites at a small size, so they read as toys on a shelf rather than a cartoon in your face.

Nothing is a video. The scene is generated live on your graphics card with WebGL, so it never loops and never looks the same twice.

What it reacts to

• Mouse: a slow cursor gets stalked; a fast one gets chased.
• Music: the beat sets the zoomies when music sync is on.
• Night: they nap more after dusk, following the sun at your location.

Questions

Do they do the same routine every time?

No. Each kitten picks its next action from its own state and what the others are doing, so every tab is a fresh few minutes.

Is Kitten Room free?

It is a Pro theme. Pro is a one-time $19 purchase, no subscription, that unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every future theme.

Are they big on screen?

No. They are deliberately small, about a fifth of the height of the page, so the room reads as a scene rather than a cartoon in your face.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
