Breath on Glass
kind words written on a fogged window

What you see on every new tab

Breath on Glass is a cold window pane on the New Tab page. Wherever the fingertip passes, the fog clears and the lights behind come into focus through the letters. Beads of condensation act as tiny lenses, and drips cut clear streaks on their way down.

• The messages: eighty-five short ones, such as "You are loved", "You got this", "Rest is part of the work" and "Healing isn't linear".
• The doodles: twenty-one, including a smiley, a cat, a heart, balloons, a snail, a sailboat and a game of noughts and crosses.
• The handwriting: script and print take turns. Some messages are slanted or underlined, and now and then the dots on the i's are hearts.
• The colours: ten moods, from rose, peach and lavender to carnival and aurora, changing every few messages.

Nothing is a video. The fog, the writing, the beads and the drips are drawn live on your graphics card, and the messages are shuffled.

What it reacts to

• Mouse: move it over the glass and it wipes the fog like the palm of a hand. The patch fogs back after a few seconds, and a wipe can start a drip.
• Your name: optional. Type a first name in the Themes panel and some messages will use it, including "Good morning" before noon. Leave it blank and it is never used.
• Night: the page dims after dusk.

Questions

Do the messages repeat?

Not until you have seen them all. The eighty-five messages and twenty-one doodles are shuffled into one deck, and a new tab carries on where the last one stopped.

Is Breath on Glass free?

It is a Pro theme. Pro is $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year. It unlocks every Pro theme, music sync, and every new theme as it is released. Cancel anytime.

Where does my name go?

Nowhere. If you type one, it is saved in your own browser so the theme can write it on the glass. It is never sent to us.

Does it work on my phone?

No. It's a desktop browser extension for Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. If you're reading this on a phone, send yourself the link.
